Moving Upward and Onward

Gui Ping works as a planner in the Active Mobility Unit at LTA. In this position, she helps develop the walking and cycling network throughout Singapore to encourage people of all ages to shift towards more active and sustainable modes of transportation.

On top of the municipal issues related to walking and cycling in the areas assigned to her, she also handles several other projects. A project that she has just recently completed is the realisation of an on-road cycling lane along Tanah Merah Coast Road.

As a manager in the Electro-Mobility Singapore Programme Office (EMSPO), Harmesh helps spearhead the electro-mobility-related initiatives within LTA. Working closely with other government agencies, Harmesh and his colleagues conduct trials on e-mobility in order to assess their feasibility for larger scale implementation.

Beyond electro-mobility, the EMSPO is also exploring other alternative energy technologies, looking at the larger green transport agenda in LTA and Singapore as a whole.

Harmesh shares that EMSPO is exploring new technologies and their application in numerous different fields, in line with LTA’s forward-looking culture and a corporate vision to constantly evolve. As Harmesh elaborates, “The next five years will be very exciting as new technological advancements and developments re-shape the transport system today.”

“The management here really makes a difference – the superiors who are nurturing, supportive, and always generous in sharing their experiences. They develop us and our careers.”

According to Gui Ping, working in LTA is never dull as there are always new challenges to overcome. With the countless opportunities to venture in various aspects of Singapore’s land transport system, there is always something new to learn every day at work. “Moreover, there are always people around to help you along the way. The management here really makes a difference – the superiors who are nurturing, supportive, and always generous in sharing their experiences. They develop us and our careers,” she adds.

Gui Ping decided to apply for a job in LTA after a schoolmate introduced her to the Active Mobility Unit. As she recalls, “He told me that LTA has a dynamic workplace with ample opportunities to grow. As a graduate fresh out from the formal education system, I was looking for a nurturing environment to learn new skills and grow as a person.” After working in LTA for a year, it is certain that LTA is exactly what she was looking for.

The most fulfilling aspect of working in LTA for Gui Ping and Harmesh is definitely the ability to make a difference to society and improve the day-to-day lives of the people. Harmesh shares, “The beauty of working within LTA is that the customer is, more often than not, somebody from Singapore. The work we do and the projects that we roll out directly impact the everyday life of people today. Being in a position to improve these many lives is a reward in itself, but the most fulfilling element comes when a project is seen to fruition and its benefits and impact on the people become tangible.”
