A Force To Reckon With

Singapore Civil Defence Force
For over thirty years, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has a significant role in keeping the nation safe and secure. Its main function is to assure vigilant emergency preparedness in any threatening situations that may arise. SCDF’s jurisdiction lies in the provision of fire-fighting, rescue and emergency medical services, and mitigating hazardous materials incidents. At the heart of achieving excellence in these missions are the people whom the SCDF trains to be equipped with competency and courage to serve their country.

SCDF is an organisation that supports academics and continual education, providing sponsorships to talented and passionate individuals. 21-year-old Tan Rui Wen was one such recipient of the Home Team ITE (Institute of Technical Education) sponsorship, as he demonstrated the resilience and will to keep Singapore secure. Now, he has also won the Home Team Diploma sponsorship, where he is currently pursuing nursing at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, which will afford him the opportunity to upgrade his academic qualifications. He has this to share of his experience thus far:

“I came across the Home Team ITE sponsorship during my ITE career fair. The sponsorship not only provides financial incentives during my studies, but also a rewarding career at SCDF.

“SCDF’s academic sponsorships not only provide financial incentives during my studies, but also a rewarding career at SCDF. I am concurrently studying and training to assume the role of crew leader as a Paramedic, attending to emergency cases in the ambulance and providing pre-hospital care and treatment.”

As a trainee, one of the most memorable experiences was when I passed the ambulance evaluation which is a requirement before you can graduate. When I did, I could not contain my excitement, and the first person I wanted to share in this glory with me was my mentor from the fire station. She was not only a great mentor, but a genuine friend. She advised me on both my professional and personal matters that made a big difference in my life. Therefore, I am very thankful to her and knew she had a part to play in my success.

I would encourage students to consider a career with SCDF because working in the Force is very fulfilling. By responding to medical emergencies, we are responding to people’s needs. By serving in SCDF, one harnesses a strong feeling of community with the people of Singapore; all cases are different and it is rewarding every time when you know that you have helped someone.”
